About UN Women
A global champion for women and girls, UN Women is the United Nations entity responsible for promoting women’s empowerment and gender equality. It was established to accelerate progress to meet the needs of women and girls worldwide.
We support UN Member States as they set global standards for achieving gender equality, but we also work with civil society to ensure that these standards are effectively implemented.
Our aim is to make the vision of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) a reality for women and girls and we firmly stand behind women’s equal participation in all aspects of life. Read more ►
UN Women Liaison Office for the GCC
The UAE has been a strong supporter of the mission of UN Women since its inception in 2010, and in October 2016, the UN Women Liaison Office for GCC was inaugurated through an MOU between the General Women’s Union, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and UN Women under the patronage of Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, Chairwoman of the General Women’s Union and the Family Development Foundation, President of the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood, and Mother of the Nation.
Based in Abu Dhabi, the UN Women Liaison Office for the GCC will work to strengthen partnerships, mobilize resources and raise awareness to advance UN Women’s key priorities in the UAE, GCC countries, and beyond. The office is the first of its kind in the GCC and is one of seven UN Women liaison offices in the world.
Our key priorities are to:
- enhance coordination between different sectors to drive the mandate of UN Women in the UAE and GCC countries;
- strengthen partnerships to drive Sustainable Development Goal 5 on advancing gender equality;
- further the women, peace and security agenda; and
- realize progress on the women’s economic empowerment agenda in the UAE and GCC.
Memorandum of Understanding
The UN Women Liaison Office for the GCC was inaugurated in October 2016 through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the UAE’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, the General Women’s Union (GWU), and UN Women. The agreement was signed by UN Women Deputy Executive Director Lakshmi Puri and UAE Assistant Minister for Legal Affairs Abdulrahim Yousif Al Awadi. Read more ►
Gender Dimensions of International Peace and Security: Key to Peace and Prosperity
18–19 December 2017, Abu Dhabi
Under the patronage of Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, Chairwoman of the General Women’s Union and the Family Development Foundation, President of the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood, and Mother of the Nation; TRENDS Research & Advisory, Women in International Security (WIIS) and UN Women joined hands to host for the first time a global summit on women in peace and security in the UAE. His Highness Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Cabinet Member and Minister of State for Tolerance, on behalf of Her Highness Sheikha Fatima Bint Mubarak, delivered the opening remarks.
Speakers included Her Excellency Reem Ebrahim Al Hashimi, Cabinet Member and Minister of State for International Cooperation, Ambassador Lana Zaki Nusseibeh, Permanent Representative of the UAE to the United Nations in New York, Ambassador Mara Marinaki, the European Union’s External Action Service, Professor Michael Brown from George Washington University, Mohamed Naciri, Director, UN Women Bureau for the Arab states, Dr. Mouza Al Shehhi, Director of UN Women UAE Liaison Office for the GCC, Daniel de Torres from DCAF, Fawziya Abdi Ali (WIIS- Horn of Africa) and Irene Fellin, (WIIS- Italy).
The conference tackled various topics of strategic importance to drive the women in peace and security (WPS) agenda, including the empowerment of women and its importance in furthering peace, the gender dimensions of national security policies, and the way forward to integrate and mainstream gender into programs and plans in this area.
